What does Jelmata mean?

1

Cellmata

The game started with a different name: Cellmata. The “Cell” part was a nod to Cell Division, another game we'd built on that theme, and “-mata” leaned into automata. Jelmata has that cellular-automata feel baked in — a grid, some rules, moves propagating into shapes. Cells on a board, evolving move by move.

Jelmata

The change came about by accident. We were working on another game called JellySplit at the same time, and after enough hours of staring at jellies, the connected cells on the Jelmata board started looking a lot more like gels than cells — soft, stretchy, fusing into bigger blobs whenever they touched. So we swapped “Cell” for “Jel” and ended up with Jelmata.

That's it. Nothing crazy — we just made up a name we liked.
